Summary

WINNER OF THE MAN BOOKER INTERNATIONAL PRIZE 2017

A Guardian and New Statesman Book of the Year

The setting is a comedy club in a small Israeli town。 An audience that has come expecting an evening of amusement instead sees a comedian falling apart on stage; an act of disintegration, a man crumbling, as a matter of choice, before their eyes。 They could get up and leave, or boo and whistle and drive him from the stage, if they were not so drawn to glimpse his personal hell。 Dovaleh G, a veteran stand-up comic – charming, erratic, repellent – exposes a wound he has been living with for years: a fateful and gruesome choice he had to make between the two people who were dearest to him。

A Horse Walks into a Bar is a shocking and breathtaking read。 Betrayals between lovers, the treachery of friends, guilt demanding redress。 Flaying alive both himself and the people watching him, Dovaleh G provokes both revulsion and empathy from an audience that doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry – and all this in the presence of a former childhood friend who is trying to understand why he’s been summoned to this performance。

A sad and moving story of loss, told at great pace。 The reader is put in the shoes of a man watching someone he used to know when he was a child perform a stand up comedy show that gets steadily fewer laughs。 I’m always suspicious of stand up comics as there often seems to be sadness and insecurity there, with humour used to mask these and the comic character in this story is no different。 Nevertheless I didn’t find myself wanting to walk out the show as many viewers in the story do。 Might have A sad and moving story of loss, told at great pace。 The reader is put in the shoes of a man watching someone he used to know when he was a child perform a stand up comedy show that gets steadily fewer laughs。 I’m always suspicious of stand up comics as there often seems to be sadness and insecurity there, with humour used to mask these and the comic character in this story is no different。 Nevertheless I didn’t find myself wanting to walk out the show as many viewers in the story do。 Might have given this an extra star if it wasn’t for the racist joke which the novel would have been equally effective without — totally unnecessary。 。。。more

Interesting narrative style and emotional。 Just that I felt it meanders a bit too much。

Quite a deceptive title, dark story disguised as a stand up piece。 It was a completely new concept for me。 An emotional rollercoaster! One moment you are cracking up then suddenly there is this rage。 But most of the time it is only grief and sadness。 However there is something which I couldn't get a hold on, I couldn't experience all the emotions Dov was trying to throw。 May be because the concept was so raw and bizzare。 Also I felt this should be read in one or two sitting。 Quite a deceptive title, dark story disguised as a stand up piece。 It was a completely new concept for me。 An emotional rollercoaster!

Bir stand-up gösterisindeyiz。 Bizim masamız neresi diye sorarsanız; kenarda, karanlıkta çok göze çarpmayan bir masa。 Dovaleh'in kendisini izlemesi için davet ettiği emekli bir hakimin gözünden izliyoruz gösteriyi。 Kitap boyunca ortam çok güzel canlanıyor zihnimde: Mekandaki hareketlilik, gösteriye gelenler, gösteriyi bırakıp gidenler, kahkahalar, masalara vurmalar, alkışlar, nefeslerin tutulduğu anlar。。 Gece ilerledikçe gösteri komediden bambaşka yerlere gidiyor, Dovaleh kendi hikayesini anlatma Bir stand-up gösterisindeyiz。 Bizim masamız neresi diye sorarsanız; kenarda, karanlıkta çok göze çarpmayan bir masa。 Dovaleh'in kendisini izlemesi için davet ettiği emekli bir hakimin gözünden izliyoruz gösteriyi。 Kitap boyunca ortam çok güzel canlanıyor zihnimde: Mekandaki hareketlilik, gösteriye gelenler, gösteriyi bırakıp gidenler, kahkahalar, masalara vurmalar, alkışlar, nefeslerin tutulduğu anlar。。 Gece ilerledikçe gösteri komediden bambaşka yerlere gidiyor, Dovaleh kendi hikayesini anlatmaya başlıyor。 Stand up şeklindeki kurgusuyla farklı bir kitap ve atmosferi başarıyla yansıtıyor。 Hakimin hikayesini, Dovaleh'in hakimle olan ilişkisini daha fazla okumak isterdim。 Çünkü kitabın başlarındaki o kısımlar merak uyandırıcıydı。 Mesela neden 20 yıldır görüşmediği bir adamı çağırıyor, tam olarak ne görmesini bekliyor ve hakim ne görüyor? Gösteriden sonra komedyenin ve hakimin oturup konuştuğu bir sahne çok güzel olurdu bence。 3,5 / 5 ( goodreadste buçuklu puanlar verebilsek keşke )not: Kitabın isminden ve bir stand-up olmasından dolayı aklıma Bojack Horseman geldi ister istemez。 İzleyenler bilir, Bojack'in de stand-up yapmışlığı var。 Komediyi bırakıp da sahnede kendi depresif hikayesini anlatmak tam Bojack'lik bir hareket olurdu。 。。。more

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for this one。Started off great。 The setting of this book is very different from anything else that I have read。 The story starts off pretty linearly。 You are at a stand-up show。 At some point, it becomes knotty and you do not understand what is going on。 Whatever the stand-up comic is saying, is too personal and not quite suited for a stand-up show。 But you are curious。 You want to know how his story goes。 Especially when you know that the narrator happens to know Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for this one。Started off great。 The setting of this book is very different from anything else that I have read。 The story starts off pretty linearly。 You are at a stand-up show。 At some point, it becomes knotty and you do not understand what is going on。 Whatever the stand-up comic is saying, is too personal and not quite suited for a stand-up show。 But you are curious。 You want to know how his story goes。 Especially when you know that the narrator happens to know the stand-up comic and there is purpose to his presence there。 So far, so good。 But post a certain point, the narration becomes a little tiring。 Or so it felt to me。It is a fairly short book, but difficult to read, for its content is heavy - personal losses and regrets galore。 I may have gotten a little annoyed for the drag the story was becoming (lot of repetitions; the story just would not progress!!!), but I still do not regret having picked it。 。。。more

A really novel format being based around 2hour stand up set and the comedian’s wrestle with the joke-hungry audience to tell of his tragic childhood and keep it funny。 Our perspective is from an old acquaintance, begged by the comic (Dov) to come and tell him what he sees。Whilst it’s clear that there’s history to be unpacked between the two, I wasn’t massively gripped by the book and did take a month long break about a third, just not getting a lot from the standup routineDov G a really interes A really novel format being based around 2hour stand up set and the comedian’s wrestle with the joke-hungry audience to tell of his tragic childhood and keep it funny。 Our perspective is from an old acquaintance, begged by the comic (Dov) to come and tell him what he sees。Whilst it’s clear that there’s history to be unpacked between the two, I wasn’t massively gripped by the book and did take a month long break about a third, just not getting a lot from the standup routineDov G a really interesting main character though and someone I could definitely place in my life from childhood memories。 Things do get pretty moving once more of Dov’s history is revealed but I just don’t think the book did a whole lot for me 。。。more

For an award winning book, this did not tickle my funny bone。 A stand up comedian gone rogue is perhaps a new concept to me。 But honestly, I boringly dragged through most of the book just to finish it。 Glad it's limited to around 200 pages。 Not a great edition to my Kindle collection。 For an award winning book, this did not tickle my funny bone。 A stand up comedian gone rogue is perhaps a new concept to me。 But honestly, I boringly dragged through most of the book just to finish it。 Glad it's limited to around 200 pages。 Not a great edition to my Kindle collection。 。。。more

I gave this four stars because I thought the writing was very good。 Not five stars because I felt like putting the book down as a bad experience。 A Horse Walks Into A Bar is like the start of so many jokes but this book's story isn't funny on any level。 It took me to about half way through before being able to deal with it。 It really is a sad story。 I gave this four stars because I thought the writing was very good。 Not five stars because I felt like putting the book down as a bad experience。 A Horse Walks Into A Bar is like the start of so many jokes but this book's story isn't funny on any level。 It took me to about half way through before being able to deal with it。 It really is a sad story。 。。。more
